For $152 this hotel was an absolute steal. The gym was fantastic, the decor throughout was very fresh and modern and the staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating. I really liked the club lounge breakfast and am sure that it would be a great place to grab a drink in the evening too.
If you're staying in Long Beach this hotel is very hard to argue with!
There is a lot to like about SWISS business class but there are more than enough negatives to place this in the second tier of business class products behind the likes of Qatar, Etihad and Singapore Airlines. If the cabin was all throne seats and there was dine on demand, things would be very different. For the average passenger though, ending up crammed next to a stranger by the window, with access to a lower tier of lounge, any of the three aforementioned airlines would provide a better experience when flying on their flagship long haul routes.
The Senator Lounge at Zurich's E gates redefines what an airport lounge can be. If this was a First Class facility it would be amongst the best in the world. The fact that it is open to frequent flyers across the Star Alliance network, flying shorthaul economy, is absolutely stultifying.
SWISS shorthaul business is quite a bare bones affair. No jacket hanging, an economy seat, no centre table and no hot food.
The service was very efficient and friendly but this was ultimately an economy experience in everything but name.
The CX reverse herringbone business class seat is often used as the benchmark for what is acceptable in a business class product nowadays. For a daytime flight I absolutely agree. It supplies storage, comfort and direct aisle access to every single passenger. There really are no bad seats on Cathay, it's nicer to get a window seat of course but it isn't a massive downgrade to end up in a middle seat.
The crew were excited to be there, I was excited to be there and everything just fell into place. The service was spectacular throughout and it was great to have so many interesting conversations with a group of people who seemed to care so deeply about their jobs.
Having since visited the newly refurbished Pier Business class lounge, this comes in a definite second. If you just need somewhere to grab something quick and you're pressed for time, this lounge is great. If you want to spend hours really maximising your lounge time and making a day out of it, The Pier is the lounge for you.
If you are short on time and have to stay near the low numbered gates, the QF lounge is the place to be. The food, drink and service are, on the whole, much better than the CX Wing lounge - that includes the Wing's First Class section.
If you are staying here, don't leave it to chance, pay for the view, it is totally worth it. However, my other comments still hold, if you want something more modern and luxurious go with the Ritz or The Upper House. If you want to be able to walk straight out of your front door and into the action, stay at the Mandarin. When it comes to getting value for money though, a points redemption with a cash upgrade at the IC is hard to argue with.
